While on gasoline mode, the XP12000EH has a runtime rating of 10 hours on a full 8.3-gallon tank. As for propane mode, a 40-pound tank will supply you with roughly 20 hours of power.

Quiet Operation

While running at half capacity on either fuel source, this portable generator will produce roughly 72 decibels of noise – about the equivalent of a vacuum cleaner. Granted, vacuum cleaners aren’t exactly known for being whisper-quiet, but it still relatively quiet, at least compared to other generators on the market.

Apart from the droning buzz of the motor, a lot of the sounds coming from a generator are due to unstable legs that make clattering sounds against paved surfaces. However, thanks to the sturdy four-point design of this tool (stands and huge wheels), this generator won’t rock back and forth and cause minor earthquakes when activated.

To turn this machine on, simply insert the provided key into the ignition and turn. If there’s fuel and no oil problems, the XP12000EH should turn right on. Turning it off requires turning the key in the opposite direction. The starter’s battery is automatically charged whenever the generator is turned. If for whatever reason the electric starter fails (low battery or maintenance issues which are unfortunately too common for our liking), you can pull on the recoil cord to start her up.

Portability

The dry weight of this tool is roughly 269 pounds which, for the average person, is pretty much impossible to lift on your own. Loading this machine onto a truck or RV can be quite challenging if you don’t have several helping hands. However, once it’s on the ground, you can maneuver the XP12000EH to wherever you need power by lifting the handles and pushing/tugging. With the XP12000EH, you get two standard 120V 12-amp outlets for plugging appliances directly into the generator. You also get several different outlets for hooking the generator up to an RV our inlet box. Verdict

With all things considered, we can say with quite a bit of confidence that if your home or RV needs 12,000 watts of portable power, then the DuroMax XP12000EH is a great generator to have. For home usage, this “portable” model can actually be a viable standby generator due to its massive output capacity. On the road, the only trouble you’ll have is loading and unloading this beast of a generator, but after that, it’s smooth sailing. Another thing buyers need to be conscious of is the somewhat faulty electric starter, but tugging on the record coil once or twice can solve startup issues instantly.

Generators are vital machines that every homeowner and outdoorsman should consider purchasing. A portable generator is the more versatile type of generator that you can take to wherever you need power. They come in handy in a wide range of situations, from power outages to tailgating parties.

Some portable generators take versatility to a whole other level by being able to run off of either gasoline or liquid propane. One such model is the DF475 from WEN, a portable generator that’s strong enough to power a home, yet compact enough to take with you outdoors. But is this dual fuel portable generator any goodLet’s find out.


Surge and Running Wattages

Surge watts is the amount of power a generator can provide to kick-start your appliances to life, whereas running watts is what a generator can provide on a consistent basis. You never want to overload a generator beyond its running wattage rating since it can cause damage to the motor. Thankfully, this generator has circuit breakers to protect the motor from overload.

Since this tool can run on either gasoline or liquid propane, it has two different surge and running wattage ratings. When running on gasoline, the DF475 generates 4,750 surge watts and 3,800 running watts. When switched to liquid propane mode, it generates 4,350 surge watts and 3,500 running watts.

Don’t be surprised by the variance in the surge and running watts between the two different fuel sources. Liquid propane is naturally less efficient compared to gasoline when converted into electricity. It’s a shame that this unit doesn’t have a storage compartment for liquid propane.

120V and 240V

Different appliances require different voltages to operate. You may even find that your home has both 120V and 240V for certain rooms. With a flick of a switch, the DF475 can provide energy for either one, making this a great machine for use when out in the open road or at home during emergencies.

Electric Starter

With the DF475, you don’t have to worry about tugging on recoil cords and praying to the generator gods that the motor will turn on. Instead, insert a key into the ignition and turn it to start. To turn the machine off, twist the key in the opposite direction and detach it from the ignition. Easy peasy.

Tank Capacity and Runtime

If you take this generator outdoors, then you need to be aware of how large the fuel tank is and how long it’ll provide power. The DF475 comes with a moderate 4-gallon tank and generates power for up to 11 hours when running at half capacity (1,900 watts). There isn’t anything too spectacular about the runtime of this machine since, on average, most 4,000-watt generators can supply about 10 to 11 hours of power on a full tank.

When switched to liquid propane mode and using a 20-gallon tank, this generator will provide power for just a little over 7 hours.

Available Outlets

On the control panel of the generator, you’ll find a wide selection of different outlets to plug your appliances in. There are two 120V 20-amp standard outlets and a single 12V DC outlet in the shape of a cigarette lighter receptacle. To connect this generator to your home, you can plug in a power cord with a NEMA L14-30R plug to your home’s inlet box.

Portability

The whole point of a portable generator is that it can be taken to wherever power is needed, whether it’s in a remote area to kick-start power tools, in the outdoors to power a portable fridge, or even at home to light up your house. The DF475 weighs a hefty 108 pounds (dry weight) which can be quite a bit too much to lift alone. However, there are two handles on either side of the tool so two people can carry it without dragging them down. In addition, the DF475 comes with two massive rubber tires. Wheeling the unit across all terrains – grassy, smooth, and rocky – is easy thanks to the never-go-flat wheels.

Digital Hour Counter

When operating a generator, it can be quite easy to lose track of time. Thankfully, this portable generator comes with an LED digital hour counter which displays for how long the machine has been running. However, there is no estimate for how much longer the generator will continue producing electricity, so there’s still a bit of guesswork involved.

Verdict

Overall, we think that the WEN DF475 is an exceptional portable generator. The only criticism we have for this tool is its lack of a storage compartment for LP tanks, but we don’t consider that a deal-breaker. This portable generator delivers a ton of power for activating several moderate- to large-size appliances (portable fridges, TVs, and even a single portable AC). The fact that you can choose which fuel source to convert into power with a turn of a dial (gasoline and LP) is a huge plus for people who have the option of choosing one or the other.

Westinghouse is a fairly new generator manufacturer that stills has some kinks to undo. However, their WH200iXLT model – a super-quiet, user-friendly inverter generator – is truly something to behold. In this article, we’d like to review the WH200iXLT and give you our two cents on what makes it a reliable generator for the road.


Starting and Running Watts

When shopping for a generator, there are two important figures that you need to find. The first is the starting wattage which indicates how much power the generator can supply to kick-start your appliances to life. The second is the running or continuous wattage which is the cap on how much power the generator can supply to keep your appliances running.

The WH2200iXLT is rated 2,200 starting watts and 1,800 running watts which, if have a standby generator at home, is quite small. However, keep in mind that portable generators indeed have smaller power capacities and are used only to keep your most vital appliances up and running. 2,200 watts is on the lower end of the portable generator wattage spectrum.

Inverter Technology

Traditional generators are good and all, but they don’t supply the kind of clean power you’d need to charge sensitive electronics. Inverter generators, on the other hand, do. We don’t want to get all technical about inverter technology since the only thing you need to know about it is it produces cleaner electricity, it runs more efficiently, and it has an efficient mode to increase the machine’s fuel economy while only providing the necessary amount of power for your plugged-in appliances.

Runtime

Recoil Starter

One thing we were a bit disappointed about is the lack of an electric starter. Most modern inverter generators can turn on with a turn of a key, eliminating the need for recoil cords, and ensuring that the generator is activated only with proper authorization. However, it’s not a deal-breaker in our opinion, and the WH2200iXLT usually turns on within the first two pulls of the recoil cord.

Verdict

The WH2200iXLT Portable Inverter Generator by Westinghouse can be a great option if you’re in need of limited, portable power. This model upholds the good name of all inverter generators out there by being whisper-quiet, running efficiently, and supplying good, clean power to your appliances and gadgets. It’s also easy to load and transport so taking it with you on the road is no problem at all.

Remember earlier how we talked about inverter generators being quitter than traditional generatorsWell, in the case of the iGen2200, at max capacity, the tool generates only around 52 decibels. To put this in perspective, 52 decibels is just about the same noise level as your fridge when the compressor is activated. Although inverter technology has a lot to do with noise control, we’re glad that Westinghouse included dual mufflers to further sound-proof this unit.

Parallel Compatibility

One thing that some users may find frustrating is that the iGen2200, though a wonderful generator, has limited power capacity. Essentially, the iGen2200 from Westinghouse is a great portable inverter generator for its price and capacity. It does supply a ton of power, so home-use is extremely limited. However, when out on camping trips in the middle of the woods or at tailgate parties, it’ll provide more than enough power for small- and medium-sized appliances. Better yet, if you or a buddy of yours has another Westinghouse inverter generator, you can more than double the amount of power by using the parallel cord.

However, this means all of your vital appliances need to be in one area of your home. You may need to adjust their positions in order to get their power cords plugged into the extension cord. During a blackout, the power source will have a limited amount of electricity that can power certain circuits through the automatic/universal transfer switch. How do I use a transfer switch?

Hooking up a portable generator to your home is rather easy. The method of getting your generator to supply power to different circuits depends on which type of transfer switch you have. Assuming your generator is plugged into an inlet box, you need to do the following based on which transfer switch you have.

Using a manual transfer switch is easy as long as you know the proper steps.

1. Go to your home’s electrical panel and flip all the circuits to the OFF position.
2. Start up your portable generator and give it time to warm up.
3. Go to the transfer switch and flip the main breakers to the GENERATOR position.
4. Look at your electrical panel and flip the switches of any circuits you want to be powered to the ON position. Be sure to do this one circuit at a time to prevent a sudden overloading of your generator.
5. When utility power is restored, go to the transfer switch and flip the main breakers back to the UTILITY position.
6. Flip any circuits that were previously on the OFF position to the ON position.
7. Shut off your generator and give the engine time to reach a full stop.
8. Disconnect the power cord connecting the generator to the inlet box.

Automatic transfer switch

Having an automatic transfer switch is super-convenient since everything is basically done for you. You just need to plug in your portable generator to your home’s inlet box. The transfer switch will automatically detect a potential source of power and switch from UTILITY mode to GENERATOR mode. When power is restored, disconnect your generator from the inlet box and turn it off. The transfer switch will automatically switch back from GENERATOR mode to UTILITY mode.

The answer is much simpler than you might think. However, there are some things that you should know before plugging in your portable generator to an inlet box. Pay attention to the following tips to safely operate your portable generator.

1. Read the instructions manual
Nobody knows more about a product than the person/company that produces it. Take some time to study the manual before even filling the tank up with fuel. You should learn about the type of prong the machine accepts and total amperage. Pay special attention to any warnings to special instructions since not all generators are identical in design.

2. Place the machine far away from your home/RV
One of the main reasons for doing this is to prevent any noise pollution from disruption you in your home or RV. However, although some of the newer portable generator models are designed to be whisper quiet, you should still place the machine far away from where it’ll supply power to prevent any damage or injury in the most extreme generator-related disasters (i.e., explosions).

How far away from the house does a generator need to be?

Another reason for keeping the portable generator as far away as possible is to prevent any fumes from entering your domain. As you already know, toxic fumes from generators can do some pretty bad things to our lungs and bodies, especially when exposed to them for prolonged periods of time. You should also position the generator so that the exhaust pipe is pointing away from your home/RV.

To still get power from your portable generator while it’s placed in a safe and far-away spot, you’ll need to get the right power cord. Be sure that the prong fits your generator and has the proper wire gauge to deliver electricity through long cables.

3. Place the generator on a level surface
Many portable generators come with lubrication systems which splash a bit of oil onto every moving component within the machine’s casing. This system works most effectively when the machine is level. A slope as insignificant as 10° could drastically alter the way the lubrication system, allowing some parts to run dry (something you do NOT want to happen).

4. Prepare your machine beforehand
What we mean is that you need to ensure that the generator is functioning properly before attempting to turn it on. Preparing your machine includes topping off the gas if needed, adding more generator oil if it’s below the recommended amount, and inspect the air generator, so the combustion process goes smoothly. It’s never a bad idea to have some gas, oil, and replacement air filters on hand if needed.

How to use a portable generator: Supplying power to your home or RV

The most common places that need to be supplied power are your home and RV if you’re traveling. The following guide will give you a general idea of how to operate your portable generator. Keep in mind that your experience may differ depending on the make and model of your machine.

1. Turn off the circuit breaker
If the circuit breaker is on the ON position for whatever reason while not in use, be sure that you switch it off.

2. Open the fuel valve
This valve will supply fuel from the tank into the combustion engine to create electricity. Leave the machine alone for about 30 seconds in order to let a sufficient amount of fuel enter the engine. Be sure that you close the valve every time after you’re done using the machine; this will help save a bit of fuel while your generator is stored away, and it will prevent any damage from occurring on the inside of the engine caused by stagnant gasoline.

3. Start the generator
There are three different ways to get a portable generator started: pulling on the recoil cord, pushing the electric starter button, or pressing the START button on the fob. 1. Unplug the power cord from the generator
The first thing to do when turning the machine off is unplugging the power cord from the generator. You should never unplug the cable from the inlet box first since the metal prongs are still carrying a current. Making contact with them could lead to some serious injury. For RVs, all you need to do is unplug your RV’s generator cord from the machine.

2. Turn the switch breaker off and shut the fuel valve

How to Make Portable Generator Quieter?

Generators are excellent pieces of machinery. When all hell breaks loose, and our homes are without power, you can simply plug your home transfer switch and voila, you’ll have electricity to power your most vital appliance. Generators don’t only have a purpose during blackouts, but if you’re going camping, you can get a portable generator to supply your RV or certain electronics with power.

However, no matter how great a generator is, there’s one huge downside that anybody who’s ever been in the vicinity of one knows all too well: the noise. The constant buzzing, droning, sputtering, and shaking can be a bit overwhelming, especially if your home’s electricity is out. You don’t want the stress of dealing with a generator’s noise piled on top of your frustration.

So what can we do to deal with the noise?

Apparently, we can do a lot. And a lot of what we can do doesn’t involve tweaking the machine and reducing performance. Check out our list of things you can do to reduce the noise output of loud generators.

1. Place it far away from where you’ll be

This is probably a no-brainer, and many of you have probably already done this. Obviously, you don’t want a generator next to or near where you’ll be. Standby generators should always be hunkered down far away from your home and transfer switch since a) they are loud, b) they produce a lot of noise, and c) there might be some unforeseeable disaster that strikes the generator, causing it to explode.

Of course, this means searching for the right power cord or extension cord for your generator and checking that they’re rated for your specific generator model. Also, longer cords mean you’ll need to get cords with thicker wires to provide enough “space” for electricity to travel.

2. Soundproof the generator’s stand or legs

If you find that your generator makes the most noise when it’s sputtering and jumping around, then you may need to check out the stands. Either the machine isn’t chained and mounted properly, or the stand itself is causing all the ruckus. What you can do is encase the stand or legs in rubber. This should muffle the vibration sounds a bit when the generator decides to do cartwheels on paved ground.

3. Turn down the power level of your generator

Another simple trick to getting your generator to quiet down is by reducing how much power it supplies. The tradeoff is that you’ll only be able to supply electricity to a select few appliances.

Check to see that your machine has different power settings. Most models do, even portable generators, so dialing a knob or pressing a few buttons should get the generator to reduce its noise output significantly.

4. Get an inverter generator

This isn’t really a way to get your generator to quiet down, but it’s still something to consider, especially if you’re looking to invest in a generator in the first place. Inverter generators are the newest, hippest things to happens to generators. They supply good, clean power, so sensitive electronics like laptops, Smartphones, and tablets can draw power from this type of generator.

Furthermore, one of the best features of inverter generators is the economy mode. When this mode is active, the generator will supply less electricity – surpassing its maximum runtime significantly – while only producing the slightest whisper in the breeze.

5. Put the generator in an enclosure

What we mean is that you need to build or purchase a large wooden box to house the generator. This idea is more of a “keep it out of view” solution, but the box should be able to muffle the sounds. Soundproof the box using sound insulators to reduce the generator’s volume further. You’ll also need to put rubber feet on your generator since metal-on-wood can still make some loud animal sounds. When building a box for your generator, be sure that you leave flaps so you can access the control panel easily.

6. Use a bucket of water

DO NOT splash your generator with a bucket of water out of frustration. You’ll end up destroying the machine and probably zapping yourself in the process if the explosion doesn’t take you out.

Instead, what you can do is fill a bucket up with water then, using a hose connected to your generator’s exhaust pipe, place the end of the hose inside of the bucket. The water will absorb much of noise that comes shooting out of the exhaust pipe along with many of the fumes. Keep in mind that this method won’t do anything to prevent noise from vibrations.

7. Attach a muffler to the generator’s exhaust pipe

One of the simplest ways to get your generator to quiet down is by installing a muffler. Generally speaking, larger mufflers work better at trapping sound, so you should think of getting a larger muffler if your machine is screaming all night long.

It’ll take a bit of time and power to research the various types of mufflers since they come in different shapes and sizes. Some will even work for motorcycle exhaust pipes. Just be sure that the muffler will fit or can be modified to fit your generator properly. Once again, a muffler won’t help with reducing vibration noises.

8. Change the direction of the exhaust pipe

Unless your generator’s exhaust pipe can bevel or tilt, you’ll need to add an extension to the pipe in order to redirect where the machine will blast the music of its people. It’s rather simple to do; get a flexible extension tube and connect it to the end of the exhaust pipe.

Move and bend it away from your home (perhaps aim it at your neighbors?) and you should notice a significant reduction of noise levels when inside. You can further reduce the amount of noise by installing a muffler prior to redirecting the pipe’s direction.

As you can see, there are several things you can do to get your generator to shut up without changing the output of the machine. All it takes is time, and a few materials and your home or campsite should be virtually free of loud generator sounds.
