Best Steel Workbench with Drawers in 2021: Buying Guide

Workbenches are a must-have tool for any DIYer looking to upgrade his or her craft and organizational skills. There are several types of workbenches available – from portable to stagnant to simple, one-tier models to those with several storage options. In this article, we’re going to focus on steel-frame workbenches that come with at least one drawer. The drawer, though tiny, can make a ton of difference in terms of organization and work efficiency. With a pull-out drawer, you can keep tinier objects and supplies away from your workstation to prevent clutter and other safety risks.

Best Steel Workbenches with Drawers

Giantex Workbench with Pegboard

The Giantex workbench is one of the most versatile benches on the market. The only drawback, if you consider it that, is the Giantex’s inability to move around due to the absence of casters.

Other than that, this is truly a magnificent storage system – the MDF workbench measures in at 45 x 23 inches, and it comes with a handy 41-inch tall pegboard to hang a wide assortment of tools. The entire frame is made of a powder-coated steel which will not easily bend or warp in shape. This solid workbench is designed to handle up to 220 pounds of weight.

Goplus 500-pound Bamboo Workbench

The Goplus shares a lot of common features with the Giantex, but there are several differences worth noting. For instance, the Goplus’ superior construction allows it to carry up to 500 pounds of tools and supplies without the risk of bending its steel, powder-coated frame.

The worktable offers a spacious 48 x 21-inch area to operate large tools with sufficient clearance on either side, and the 28-inch pegboard comes with a set of detachable hangers to help improve organization. The Goplus also fits extremely well in almost any interior scheme you might have going, so if you’d like to turn this workbench into a study desk for your child or your dorm room, there’s absolutely nothing that’s stopping you.

Husky 52-inch 5-Drawer Workbench

Unlike the previous models, the Husky 52-inch sits on four casters. These allow users to push and pull the workbench to any spot in their garage workshop wherever it provides the most convenience. Be careful when moving this large workbench since it doesn’t have any protective padding on its corners and edges so scraping it against a wall or car can lead to devastating scratches and dents.

This workbench comes with five drawers – one that spans from almost 52 inches horizontally and four smaller drawers located next to a handy cabinet. There are also six onboard outlets and two 5V USB sockets beneath the handle on the right side.

Seville UltraHD Rolling Workbench

The final two items on our list of best workbenches with drawers are Seville productions. The first is the Rolling Workbench – an extremely long unit that has a maximum weight capacity of 500 pounds. We realize that this type of workbench isn’t for everybody, and especially not for those with limited space in their garage workshops.

From end to end, this bench measures in at 77 inches. It stands at 37-1/2 inches high and does not come with height adjusting mechanism so for the overly tall folks out there; this may not be for you. However, for the rest of the world, this portable steel workbench with its 11 drawer and spacious double-door cabinet is a godsend.

Seville UltraHD Rolling Cabinet

The second Seville product is at the polar opposite end of the length spectrum. This is a cabinet-style model, meaning that you’ll only be able to place one large-size tool on top of it at any given time. The work area is 11-3/4 x 17-1/2 inches wide, it stands 4 feet tall, and it comes with four drawers and a large cabinet on the left.

On the bottom, you can find four rubberized pads to prevent scratching when moving this portable workbench-cabinet from place to place. The main thing to know about this rolling cabinet is that it’s a lot smaller than the other workbenches, so even though it may be easy to find a place for it to stay, it can’t store nearly as many supplies as the others.

Workbench Buying Guide

Worktable Area

Before settling on a particular workbench model, you need to determine how much space you need to work. This is done by choosing which of your power tools need a semi-permanent spot on the table and accounting for required clearance space on all sides.

Peg Board and Hooks

Apart from the actual worktable, you should also pay special care to the adjacent vertical wall (if there is one). The wall should be a peg board where several hooks can latch onto securely. This lets you store whatever small tools you have off your workstation to prevent clutter and damage.

Having casters can make a ton of difference. With these wheels placed beneath your workbench, you can simply drag the table to whatever spot is most convenient. Of course, you need to be aware of how the table maneuvers around tight corners and whether it can fit through doors. Additionally, pay special attention to whether the casters are lockable or not, and if they actually lock (many models have “locks” that just don’t work).

Multiple drawers and cabinets can really upgrade the functionality of a garage workbench. Drawers are great for storing smaller items like screws and drill bits, whereas any built-in cabinets can be used to safely store larger tools and supplies when they’re not needed. Just keep in mind that the fuller the workbench is, the more difficult it will be to move it around. If you choose a stagnant bench like the Giantex or Goplus then you won’t have anything to worry about.

Many portable workbenches come with multiple levels of shelves or racks for increased storage space. If you have several large tools like a disc sander, a router, and a miter saw, then you might want to consider getting a multi-tier workbench. However, the more popular models are built like one solid piece, and accessing different “floors” requires opening and closing cabinet doors. Choose whichever style you think will work best for you.

Weight Capacity

Even though modern portable workbenches are sturdy, it’s entirely possible to overload the table with several large power tools. Doing this can lead to some pretty disastrous – not to mention costly – results. Take a close look at the maximum weight capacity of the workbench to determine whether it’s strong enough to carry and transport whatever tools you store on top of it.

Frame Material

To get the most out of your workbench, you should consider spending a bit more on a steel-framed unit. Steel workbenches are typically covered in a powdered coating which protects against rusting. This is particularly useful if you plan on leaving the workbench in your garage where moisture can get at your workbench and tools, rendering them useless in just a few months.

Table Material

While we’re on the topic of what materials are used to construct the workbench, you also need to consider what the actual worktable is made of. The most common is some sort of wood, but unique workbenches like the Goplus use bamboo to give a creative aura to the unit.

1. Are worktables hard to assemble?

The answer to this question is an unequivocal yes. Upon receiving a worktable, take a look at any paperwork found within the box. They should include instructions on where all the screws, nuts, and bolts go to have the unit standing in no time. Every other piece should snap together.

2. How much stuff can I put into the drawers?

As much as you’d like. Since the drawers aren’t extremely large, filling them with to the brim with tiny objects like screws, drill bits, or nails without causing damage. Just be reasonable with what you place inside of the drawers. As long as the tiny pieces aren’t made of an extremely heavy material like gold, your table should be good.

3. Do I have to install the casters (portable worktables)?

Not at all. If you opt for any of the latter three models from our list, it’s not mandatory to install the casters to have the unit sit perfectly horizontal to your floor. This is a benefit of having a portable workbench – you, the user, can decide whether to install the casters or turn the unit into a stagnant workbench for your at-home shop. The Giantex and Goplus don’t offer this sort of decision-making freedom.

If you need a space to work and store your supplies, then consider investing in a workbench with drawers. The drawers and, if available, pegboards are excellent for storing your equipment, and some models even come with spacious cabinets for large power tools. Of the five workbenches on our list, we favor the Goplus for its stylish look and durable build, but the super-long Rolling Workbench by Seville is definitely a top contender in the movable organization system market.
